Upgrade Dell OpenManage Enterprise 4.0.1 to 4.1

By H. Cemre Günay

In this blog post I would like to describe the Upgrade Process from OME 4.0.1 to 4.1, but let’s start with some news first:

Resolved Issues

  • When inventory validation is performed for more than 300 devices, the OpenManage Enterprise audit log for the inventory validation shows only 250 devices.
  • When the Services REST API is used to edit the attributes of a Services device group, such as email ID or group name, the group attributes are successfully updated. However, this action removes the devices in the device group.

Platform Support

  • OpenManage Enterprise Services supports the latest PowerEdge 16G models, iDRAC versions, and operating systems.

Important

  • After password rotation occurs in iDRAC using CyberArk, there might be a delay in the Services device operations, such as manual collection, scheduled collection, inventory validation, device inventory synchronization between OpenManage Enterprise and Services, and device collection for the alerts that are qualified for case creation.

Recommendation

  • Dell recommends applying this update during your next scheduled update cycle. The update contains feature enhancements or changes that will help keep your system software current and compatible with other system modules, including firmware, BIOS, drivers, and software.

Limitations

  • After installing or upgrading to OpenManage Enterprise Services from the previous version, wait for a few minutes for the services to start, and then start using the Services plug-in.

For customers who are still on version 3.10.x, a new deployment will be necessary, which I have described in this post:

Updating from 4.x upwards is very relaxed. So let’s head over to the Upgrade Process, under Application Settings go to Console and Plugins:

There we explicitly see an update option to 4.0.1:

OME retrieves the update packages for OS and plugins via the Internet, I have written a blog post for dark sites about the plugins, see under:

After clicking on Update, the Update Console opens with important information about the update process itself.

First of all, the packages must be downloaded and for this you click on Download Update, the download job can be observed under Jobs:

Under Console and Plugins we see that the update bundle has been successfully downloaded.

So we click on Update again and the Update Console opens with the same information, only this time we have the option to start the update process.

In the last step, we can activate a Notification and the 2nd important Message – Snapshot of OME VM!

So if you did not took a snapshot already, at least now its time for:

Now we can check the two boxes, the notification is optional:

And Confirm the Update:

Here we go the Update Process begins:

All necesssary Packages wil be installed

And after a reboot of the OME Appliance the Services will start and you will get you access back to the GUI.
