irgNET – LAB 1.0 U1

By H. Cemre Günay

After discovering VMware vSphere 6.7, I started to implement first applications on the hypervisor. One was Pi-hole, based on Linux, in my case a Debian 9 VM, which acted as a tracking- and ad-blocker as well as an optional DHCP server.

On the other hand – FreeNAS a free operating system (FreeBSD) for Network Attached Storage (NAS). For this I built a corresponding FreeBSD VM. My HP MicroServer Gen8 does not have a physical RAID controller, so I had to mount all 4x 3.5″ drives individually to the FreeNAS VM and create a software RAID 5 and provide a datastore to VMware vSphere via NFS – sounds like from behind through the chest into the eye but it worked.

The software based B120i RAID controller, which is integrated in the Microserver Gen8, is not recognized by VMware vSphere 6.7 and following versions.

In addition, it was time to expand my wireless network, since my router alone could not serve the entire floor. For this I bought 2x HPE Aruba AP 203R and use it via wireless mesh with the FRITZ!Box 6490. Unfortunately, I have not had any good experiences with the HPE Aruba access points here. One of them constantly broke out of the network and the wireless LAN quality dropped rapidly – and it was not a hardware defect!

So the new Update looked like this:
