In my last HomeLab update I told you about my <strong>VMware SD-WAN \/ SASE<\/strong> solution, this time we&#8217;ll take another look at my Data Protection Server. Because I replaced it with a <strong>Dell PowerEdge T430<\/strong> in November 2023. You can find the documentation of my old Data Protection Server here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-irgnet wp-block-embed-irgnet\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"u5YwhucHZu\"><a href=\"https:\/\/irg-net.com\/index.php\/irgnet-lab-7-0-u2\/\">irgNET-Lab 7.0 U2<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;irgNET-Lab 7.0 U2&#8221; &#8212; irgNET\" src=\"https:\/\/irg-net.com\/index.php\/irgnet-lab-7-0-u2\/embed\/#?secret=QNIfZXgY5H#?secret=u5YwhucHZu\" data-secret=\"u5YwhucHZu\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to increased requirements and the change of my data protection solution from Veeam to Dell PowerProtect, the T330&#8217;s capabilities were no longer sufficient. I could only upgrade it to a maximum of 64GB of RAM, and I used this server not only as a data protection appliance, but also as a fallback server when I needed to do something in my VMware vSAN 2-node cluster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that the <strong>Dell PowerProtect<\/strong> Appliances as well as the vCenter and other applications necessary for operation were running on the T330, which quickly pushed it to its limits. In addition, due to CPU model differences, I had to enable EVC mode in my vCenter, which I am not a fan of at all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"128\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image-18.png?resize=1024%2C128&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7150\" style=\"width:440px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image-18.png?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image-18.png?resize=300%2C38&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image-18.png?resize=768%2C96&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To deal with all these circumstances, I bought the above-mentioned <strong>Dell PowerEdge T430<\/strong>. This is a perfectly scalable server according to my requirements, e.g. up to 384GB RAM, 2x Intel Broadwell CPU and multiple PCI slots.
