This update is about changing my WAN architecture and I will use from now on the SD-WAN solution of VMware. But &#8211; What is behind <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/sd-wan.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Software-Defined WAN (SD-WAN)?<\/a><\/strong> We are not talking about a hardware addition or a software application in vSphere, but about a fundamental modification (improvement) of the WAN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN)<\/strong>&nbsp;is a software-based network technology that delivers virtualized resources to wide area network connections over both ordinary broadband Internet and private links. Applying the concepts of&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vmware.com\/topics\/glossary\/content\/software-defined-networking.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">software-defined networks<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;to WANs, SD-WAN abstracts traffic management and monitoring from network hardware and applies them to individual applications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-5.png?resize=150%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3274\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>SD-WAN can more effectively route all network traffic between&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vmware.com\/topics\/glossary\/content\/data-center-solutions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Datacenters<\/strong><\/a>, branch offices, and the cloud than traditional WAN routers. SD-WAN dynamically uses multiple available connections to find the best delivery path for traffic across the entire network, eliminating jitter and dropped data packets, to deliver an optimal user experience in even the most far-flung remote offices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we take a look at the GUI of the <strong>VMware Cloud Orchestrator<\/strong>, let us talk about the new architecture:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"955\" height=\"806\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/SD-WAN_VMwareVeloCloud.png?resize=955%2C806&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/SD-WAN_VMwareVeloCloud.png?w=955&amp;ssl=1 955w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/SD-WAN_VMwareVeloCloud.png?resize=300%2C253&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/SD-WAN_VMwareVeloCloud.png?resize=768%2C648&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 955px) 100vw, 955px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As we can see above, now I have<strong> 2 internet connections<\/strong> to <strong>enhance availability, performance and load balancing<\/strong>. On the one hand, I have a <strong>cable Internet connection<\/strong> as <strong>main WAN<\/strong> and a <strong>4G Internet connection <\/strong>as an <strong>&#8220;offload&#8221; WAN<\/strong>, which only steps in, if the main connection fails or no longer delivers the desired performance. Both <strong>1GbE<\/strong> WAN connections meet within a <strong>VMware Edge 620<\/strong> hardware appliance. At the same time, I also use the <strong>VMware Edge 620<\/strong> as a <strong>DHCP server<\/strong> for my <strong>10GbE LAN<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"833\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-12.png?resize=833%2C336&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3305\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-12.png?w=833&amp;ssl=1 833w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-12.png?resize=300%2C121&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image-12.png?resize=768%2C310&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 833px) 100vw, 833px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.vmware.com\/en\/VMware-SD-WAN\/4.2\/vmware-sd-wan-operator-guide\/GUID-6049E6C7-D0B4-45F7-B643-72792944BD1A.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VMware SD-WAN Orchestrator<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;provides centralized, enterprise-wide installation, configuration, and real time monitoring, in addition to orchestrating the data flow through the cloud network. The rules are used to determine which traffic is allowed out from LAN to the Internet, overlay, and between LAN segments. Operators, Partners, and Admins of all levels can create a business policy. The business policy <strong>matches parameters<\/strong> such as <strong>IP addresses, ports, VLAN IDs, interfaces, domain names, protocols, operating system, object groups, applications, and DSCP tags<\/strong>. When a data packet matches the match conditions, the associated action or actions are taken. The unique Cloud-Delivered architecture offers these benefits for <strong>on-premise<\/strong> and <strong>cloud applications (SaaS\/IaaS)<\/strong>. This requires building an overlay network, which consists of multiple tunnels, monitoring and adapting to the change in the underlying WAN transports in real time. This is because my <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techzone.vmware.com\/resource\/unified-access-gateway-architecture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VMware Horizon Unified Access Gateway (UAG)<\/a><\/strong> is hosted at his Datacenter. It also indicates the health of the sites (up or down status) and delivers real-time status of the sites.<br><br>Cloud VPN supports the following traffic flows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Branch to Non SD-WAN Destination via Gateway<br>\u2013 Branch to&nbsp;SD-WAN Hub<br>\u2013 Branch to Branch VPN<br>\u2013 Branch to Non SD-WAN Destination via Edge<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>So far so good for my <strong>VMware SD-WAN<\/strong> implementation. Now let us take an overall look at my two Datacenters. I want to use a new presentation concept from now on, where hardware and applications are separated.
