Especially with regard to vSAN Streched or ROBO clusters with a Witness Appliance.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-2.png?resize=139%2C144&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2985\" width=\"139\" height=\"144\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The vSAN 8 itself comes with the vSphere 8 update, furthermore the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kb.vmware.com\/s\/article\/2148493\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disk format version<\/a><\/strong> as well as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.vmware.com\/en\/VMware-vSphere\/8.0\/vsphere-networking\/GUID-330A0689-574A-4589-9462-14CA03F3F2F4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vDS version<\/a><\/strong> have to be upgraded. As far as the vSAN Witness Appliance is concerned, there are several ways to upgrade it, either with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.vmware.com\/en\/VMware-vSphere\/8.0\/vsphere-lifecycle-manager\/GUID-74295A37-E8BB-4EB9-BFBA-47B78F0C570D.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lifecycle Manager<\/a><\/strong> (formerly with Baselines) or the generally recommended way: <strong>New Deployment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The VM gets a name (in my case <strong>irgNET-wit01<\/strong>) and placed in the correct folder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"873\" and memory resources. <strong>Tiny <\/strong>is too small for my vSAN Cluster, but <strong>Medium <\/strong>fits perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" virtual disk format: <strong>Thick Provision eager zero<\/strong>, more about this below in the screenshots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" secondary network should be the one where your <strong>vSAN Streched<\/strong> or <strong>vSAN ROBO<\/strong> clusters can also communicate. For this I have created an own <strong>portgroup<\/strong>, which is called <strong>vSAN_Witness_10GbE<\/strong>. You also need to &#8220;<strong>enable<\/strong>&#8221; the <strong>Witness traffic<\/strong> on the <strong>vSAN hosts<\/strong>, but that is another topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" UI only displays the <strong>hostname <\/strong>and <strong>IPv6 addresses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div Provision<\/strong>, I logged in with F2 and applied the IPv4 address and disabled IPv6; DNS, custom prefix, etc. were set correctly. As soon as we disable IPv6 the ESXi\/Witness node needs a reboot. After the reboot I could not get into the system with the stored credentials using F2, nor could I add Witness to my vCenter as a host because supposedly the credentials were incorrect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I repeated the Witness deployment 4x with different IPs, DNS names, other settings and was always lcoked from the Witness Appliance, finally I came to the conclusion, that it must be the <strong>virtual disk format<\/strong>. As soon as I set the virtual disk format to <strong>Thick Provision Eager Zeroed<\/strong> during the configuration process, I still had the challenge to manually enter the IPv4 address after deployment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"812\" height=\"409\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/2023-01-19_105134.jpg?resize=812%2C409&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2965\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/2023-01-19_105134.jpg?w=812&amp;ssl=1 812w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/2023-01-19_105134.jpg?resize=300%2C151&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/2023-01-19_105134.jpg?resize=768%2C387&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 812px) 100vw, 812px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, after the reboot, I was able to log into the UI as usual by pressing F2 and add the Witness appliance to my vCenter and then mount it to my vSAN cluster. It seems that there is a <strong>bug <\/strong>in the <strong>vSAN Witness 8 Build 20513079<\/strong>.
