This time we will talk about the expansion of my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/vsan.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>VMware vSAN OSA ROBO 2-Node Cluster<\/strong><\/a>. My personal VMware vSAN journey started about 1 year ago:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-irgnet wp-block-embed-irgnet\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"87wHpc6rQz\"><a href=\"https:\/\/irg-net.com\/index.php\/irg-net-lab-4-0-u2\/\">irgNET-Lab 4.0 U2<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;irgNET-Lab 4.0 U2&#8221; &#8212; irgNET\" src=\"https:\/\/irg-net.com\/index.php\/irg-net-lab-4-0-u2\/embed\/#?secret=IWvT0Evh8D#?secret=87wHpc6rQz\" data-secret=\"87wHpc6rQz\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Back that time I had a usable capacity of about 3 TB, over time I have converted my single tier applications to high availability solutions. For example, I use a second <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/horizon.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>VMware Horizon Connection Server<\/strong><\/a> , a second license server for my <strong>NVIDIA P4<\/strong>, <strong>AD\/DNS<\/strong>, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beside HA functions I am implementing and testing\/using more and more applications and I am running out of 3TB. My <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/vrealize-log-insight.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VMware vRealize LogInsight<\/a><\/strong><em> <\/em>(now <strong>VMware Aria Operations for Logs<\/strong>) alone consumes about 1TB of my vSAN cluster. So bigger resources (cache &amp; capacity) must come, luckily I had the chance to become following hardware for each host:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1x Intel DC P3700 800GB NVMe<\/strong> <em>(in the past 512GB)<\/em>* <br><strong>5x Dell 1.92TB Read-Intensive SAS SSD<\/strong> <em>(in the past 800GB)<\/em><br><strong>1x 10GbE 2 Port for Management and VM Network<\/strong> <em>(in the past 1GbE)<\/em><br><strong>1x 40GbE 2 Port for vSAN and vMotion<\/strong> <em>(same in the past)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*with vSphere 8\/vSAN 8 we are able to use up to 1.6TB devices as Cache Tier. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Thanks to this capacity expansion, I have trippled the usable capacity and still use the same&nbsp;Storage Policy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Useable capacity is approx. 9TB<br>Raw capacity is approx. 19TB<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"526\" height=\"692\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2022-12-01_120106.jpg?resize=526%2C692&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2022-12-01_120106.jpg?w=526&amp;ssl=1 526w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2022-12-01_120106.jpg?resize=228%2C300&amp;ssl=1 228w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 526px) 100vw, 526px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To swap the cache and capacity devices, I had to delete the disk groups first, power off my hosts and change the cache and capacity devices. Then I had to built the new disk groups and apply the above mentioned storage policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the network side, all hosts (as described in the last few HomeLab updates) are equipped with 10GbE NICs and the 1GbE interface is &#8220;End of Life&#8221; &#8211; except for the iDRAC. The vSAN and vMotion between the 2 Nodes are still communicating via 40GbE crossover.
