It consumes a vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM) image that you create in vCenter and then import under Build \u2192 Lifecycle \u2192 &lt;VCF instance> \u2192 Image Management.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">If no image matches the target version, the wizard shows <strong>\u201cThere are no images available that match the required target version to initiate the vLCM upgrade\u201d<\/strong> and Next stays greyed out.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">ESX comes after SDDC Manager, NSX and vCenter: they must already be on 9.1.1 before you start the ESX step.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prerequisites:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ESX upgrade comes after SDDC Manager, NSX and vCenter in the management domain sequence. Before you start, make sure that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>SDDC Manager, NSX Manager and vCenter are on 9.1.1.<\/strong> In our environment they were: the Import Image dialog later shows vCenter \u201c9.1.1.0\u201d, and the upgrade plan lists SDDC Manager, NSX, vCenter and ESX as its steps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>VCF Operations and the License Servers are patched<\/strong> first, as required by the 9.1.1 release notes for ESX patching.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>The cluster uses vLCM images,<\/strong> not legacy baselines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong>Backups are in place<\/strong> (SDDC Manager and NSX, with a fresh run right before you begin \u2013 see the previous article), and the vSAN cluster is healthy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Component Versions view of the management domain shows exactly what is about to happen: four hosts on 9.1.0.0200.25557999 with the target 9.1.1.0.25714478 (\u201cVersion Drift\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"353\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-11.png?resize=1024%2C353&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-11.png?resize=1024%2C353&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-11.png?resize=300%2C103&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-11.png?resize=766%2C264&amp;ssl=1 766w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-11.png?w=1407&amp;ssl=1 1407w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Problem: There are no images available<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In VCF Operations go to Build \u2192 Lifecycle \u2192 VCF Instances \u2192 &lt;instance> \u2192 &lt;management domain> \u2192 Upgrades, plan the ESX step and click Configure. In step 3 of the wizard, \u201cAssign Images to Clusters\u201d, the cluster is listed with Target ESXi Version, Vendor Addon, HSP and Image all set to \u201cNone\u201d, and a warning appears:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"656\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-12.png?resize=1024%2C656&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-12.png?resize=1024%2C656&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-12.png?resize=300%2C192&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-12.png?resize=768%2C492&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-12.png?w=1166&amp;ssl=1 1166w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reason is simple: the image catalog of VCF Operations only contained the image of the existing version, Management-Domain-ESXi-Personality (ESXi 9.1.0.0200.25557999). Nothing in the catalog matched 9.1.1.0.25714478.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"348\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-13.png?resize=1024%2C348&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-13.png?resize=1024%2C348&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-13.png?resize=300%2C102&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-13.png?resize=765%2C260&amp;ssl=1 765w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-13.png?resize=1536%2C522&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-13.png?w=1695&amp;ssl=1 1695w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Fix: Create the Image in vCenter and import it<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open the vSphere Client, select the cluster, and go to Updates \u2192 Hosts \u2192 Image \u2192 Edit. Select the target ESXi version (here 9.1.1.0.25714478). Add a Vendor Addon or a Firmware and Drivers Addon only if you use them \u2013 I did not, so both stay empty. With internet access, sync the updates in the vSphere Client. In an environment without internet access, import the ESX offline bundle (ZIP) into the vCenter Lifecycle Manager first \u2013 the same restriction that blocked the Fleet Lifecycle binaries earlier in this upgrade.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back in VCF Operations, open Image Management and click Import Image. Choose \u201cImport from a vCenter\u201d, select the vCenter, click Refresh, select the new image and click Import. (\u201cImport from a file\u201d is the alternative: upload the JSON, ZIP and ISO files you exported from the vSphere Client.) After the import, the catalog contains a second entry for ESXi 9.1.1.0.25714478. In our case it shows up as autogen-software-spec-1, last modified on the day of the upgrade. In \u201cAssign Images to Clusters\u201d click Assign Image and pick the imported image. I reviewed the warnings (View Details, filter \u201cWarnings\u201d). I clicked Upgrade Now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Upgrades tab switches to a status view: \u201cVMware Software Upgrade 9.1.1.0\u201d, \u201cUpgrading Host Cluster\u201d, and a step list for the cluster: <strong>Start, Precheck, Upload Personality Bundle, Create Draft, Update Draft, Set Desired State, Disable DRS Rules, Remediate, Enable DRS Rules<\/strong>. The actual host-by-host work happens in the Remediate step, which is why it stays on the spinner the longest. Alarms of this kind are common while a vSAN host is in maintenance mode and objects temporarily have reduced redundancy. They are no reason to cancel a rolling upgrade, but you should check the vSAN health and make sure that no resync is running before the next host goes down. The \u201cDisk format version\u201d alarm typically refers to the on-disk format of the vSAN disks and is a separate follow-up item after the ESX upgrade, not a blocker for it.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the remediation, the Component Versions view of the management domain shows the cluster <strong>On Target<\/strong> with ESX 9.1.1.0.25714478.
