In this blog post I would like to show you how to solve the problem. If you go through with the upgrade in such a case, you will be confronted with a <strong>Purple Screen of Death (PSOD)<\/strong> relatively quickly, which you obviously want to avoid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"909\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-14.png?resize=909%2C574&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12852\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-14.png?w=909&amp;ssl=1 909w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-14.png?resize=300%2C189&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-14.png?resize=768%2C485&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 909px) 100vw, 909px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two ways to fix this issue:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:14.5px\">Repair the corrupted vFAT Partition (Recommended by VMware)<br>or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:14.5px\">Re-create the vFAT Partition<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>So let&#8217;s start &#8211; first we set the affected node to <strong>Maintenance Mode<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"711\" height=\"462\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Bild-15-1.png?resize=711%2C462&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12851\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Bild-15-1.png?w=711&amp;ssl=1 711w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Bild-15-1.png?resize=300%2C195&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 711px) 100vw, 711px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We then open an SSH session on this node and have a look at the available file systems by using the command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><code lang=\"python\" class=\"language-python\">esxcli storage filesystem list<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"176\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Bild-16.png?resize=1024%2C176&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Bild-16.png?resize=1024%2C176&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Bild-16.png?resize=300%2C52&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Bild-16.png?resize=768%2C132&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Bild-16.png?w=1363&amp;ssl=1 1363w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see both Bootbank Volumes have a <strong>vfat <\/strong>type. If further details are required, the following command can be used to display the disk and its partition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><code lang=\"python\" class=\"language-python\">vmkfstools -P \/vmfs\/volumes\/254051f4-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxxx<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"869\" height=\"151\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Bild-18.png?resize=869%2C151&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12856\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Bild-18.png?w=869&amp;ssl=1 869w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Bild-18.png?resize=300%2C52&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Bild-18.png?resize=768%2C133&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 869px) 100vw, 869px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure the smooth functioning of the subsequent steps and to prevent any disruption to the disk, it is advisable to check for open file handles and close them if necessary. Stop <strong>crond<\/strong>, which periodically schedules backup.sh, updating the active bootbank<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><code lang=\"python\" class=\"language-python\">kill $(cat \/var\/run\/crond.pid)<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"418\" height=\"34\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Bild-17.png?resize=418%2C34&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12855\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Bild-17.png?w=418&amp;ssl=1 418w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Bild-17.png?resize=300%2C24&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 418px) 100vw, 418px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Then stop <strong>vmsyslogd<\/strong>, which has open file handles on \/scratch (log files)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><code lang=\"python\" class=\"language-python\">\/usr\/lib\/vmware\/vmsyslog\/bin\/shutdown.sh<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And now check for further daemons having open file handles on the scratch partition and stop these daemons by using this command (in our case we did not have any outputs so I will put some of the examples from the KB):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><code lang=\"python\" class=\"language-python\">lsof |grep scratch\n\nExample Output:\n1001391762  vmfstracegd   FILE  4   \/scratch\/vmfstraces\/vmfsGlobalTrace.trace.0.gz\n\nSo stop this daemon by:\n\/etc\/init.d\/vmfstraced stop\n\nOutput:\nwatchdog-vmfstracegd: Terminating watchdog process with PID 1001391748\nvmfstracegd stopped\n\n---\n\nlsof |grep scratch\n\nExample Output:\n-- note: 63fe3b74-########-####-#######46fa is the UUID of the scratch partition\n\nlsof |grep 63fe3b74-########-####-########46fa\n\n1001391489  rhttpproxy            FILE                       18   \/vmfs\/volumes\/63fe3b74-########-####-#######46fa\/log\/rhttpproxy-1001391489-000000db02450060-lo0-1.pcap\n1001391489  rhttpproxy            FILE                       19   \/vmfs\/volumes\/63fe3b74-########-####-#######46fa\/log\/rhttpproxy-1001391489-000000db024501a8-vmk0-1.pcap\n\nSo stop this daemon by:\n\/etc\/init.d\/rhttpproxy stop\n\n---\n\nlsof | grep var\/run\/log\n\nExample Output\n2101088    python               FILE                       5  \/var\/run\/log\/vsandevicemonitord.log\n\n\nSo stop this daemon by:\n\/etc\/init.d\/vsandevicemonitord stop<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I have already mentioned, that there are two ways to recover your corrupted vFAT Partition and I will show you the <strong>repair <\/strong>way <strong>not re-create<\/strong>.
