To synchronize the configuration changed with persistent storage, run this command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" style=\"font-size:14px\"><code lang=\"python\" class=\"language-python\">vim-cmd hostsvc\/firmware\/sync_config<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>2. To back-up the configuration data for an ESXi host, run this command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" style=\"font-size:14px\"><code lang=\"python\" class=\"language-python\">vim-cmd hostsvc\/firmware\/backup_config<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"856\" height=\"86\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rtaImage.png?resize=856%2C86&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rtaImage.png?w=856&amp;ssl=1 856w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rtaImage.png?resize=300%2C30&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rtaImage.png?resize=768%2C77&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 856px) 100vw, 856px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:&nbsp;<\/strong>The command will output a URL (http:\/\/*\/downloads\/123456\/configBundle-xx.xx.xx.xx.tgz) in which a web browser may be used to download the file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. From a web browser navigate to&nbsp;http:\/\/Host_FQDN\/downloads\/123456\/configBundle-xx.xx.xx.xx.tgz<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this example the&nbsp;IP address of the host is&nbsp;192.168.0.81<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"667\" height=\"410\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rtaImage-1.png?resize=667%2C410&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rtaImage-1.png?w=667&amp;ssl=1 667w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rtaImage-1.png?resize=300%2C184&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The backup file will be in the \/downloads directory (default to browser or choose to download to a specific directory) as&nbsp;<strong>configBundle-<em>HostFQDN<\/em>.tgz<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"674\" height=\"144\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rtaImage-2.png?resize=674%2C144&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rtaImage-2.png?w=674&amp;ssl=1 674w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/irg-net.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rtaImage-2.png?resize=300%2C64&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 674px) 100vw, 674px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong>&nbsp;To restore the configuration the destination ESXi host must be the same build as the ESXi host configuration data. The host build can be obtained using the command&nbsp;vmware -vl .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"restoring-esxi-host-configuration-data\">Restoring ESXi host configuration data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1. The&nbsp;configBundle-<em>HostFQDN<\/em>.tgz&nbsp;should be renamed as&nbsp;configBundle.tgz&nbsp;before initiating the restore command.<br>2. Put the host into maintenance mode by running this&nbsp;command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" style=\"font-size:14px\"><code lang=\"python\" class=\"language-python\">vim-cmd hostsvc\/maintenance_mode_enter<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Copy the backup configuration file to the ESXi host or an available datastore.<br>4. Run this command to restore the ESXi hosts configuration:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" style=\"font-size:14px\"><code lang=\"python\" class=\"language-python\">vim-cmd hostsvc\/firmware\/restore_config \/backup_location\/configBundle.tgz<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Notes<\/strong>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"font-size:14px\"><li>Add a&nbsp;<strong>1<\/strong>&nbsp;to&nbsp;force an override of the UUID mismatch.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:&nbsp;vim-cmd hostsvc\/firmware\/restore_config <strong>1<\/strong> \/tmp\/configBundle.tgz<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"font-size:14px\"><li><strong>\\<\/strong>Executing this command will initiate an automatic reboot of the host after command completion.<\/li><li>However, starting from vSphere 7.0 U2, the configuration could be encrypted using TPMs and in which case, the -force option will not work if the host got changed. We need the same TPM that was used on the host during backup, to restore. In other words,&nbsp;<br>from vSphere 7.0U2, the override will not work if the host has TPM enabled.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"vsphere-cli\">vSphere CLI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"backing-up-esxi-host-configuration-data-2\">Backing up ESXi host confi<strong>guration data<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Run this command to backup the ESXi configuration: <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" style=\"font-size:14px\"><code lang=\"python\" class=\"language-python\">vicfg-cfgbackup --server=ESXi_host_IP_address --username=root -s output_file_name\n\n# for example \n\nvicfg-cfgbackup --server=10.0.0.1 --username=root -s ESXi_test1_backup.tgz<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In vSphere CLI for Windows<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.  Navigate to&nbsp;C:\\Program Files\\VMware\\VMware vSphere CLI\\bin<br>2. Run this command to backup the ESXi configuration:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" style=\"font-size:14px\"><code lang=\"python\" class=\"language-python\">vicfg-cfgbackup.pl --server=ESXi_host_IP_address --username=root -s output_file_name\n\n# for example:\n\nvicfg-cfgbackup.pl --server=10.0.0.1 --username=root -s ESXi_test1_backup.tgz<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Notes<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"font-size:15.5px\"><li>Use the &#8211;password=<em>root_password<\/em>&nbsp;option to skip the password prompt.<\/li><li>A backup text file is saved in the current working directory where you run the&nbsp;vicfg-cfgbackup&nbsp;script.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"restoring-esxi-host-configuration-data-2\"><strong>Restoring ESXi host configuration data<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Restoring the host configuration restores the state of the ESXi along with any vSphere standard switch networking configuration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:&nbsp;<\/strong>When restoring configuration data, the build number of the host must match the build number of the host on backup file and UUID (can be obtained using the command &#8220;esxcfg-info -u&#8221;) of the host should match the UUID of the host on backup file. Use the -f option (force) to override the UUID mismatch.&nbsp;However, starting from vSphere 7.0 U2, the configuration could be encrypted using TPMs and in which case, the -force option will not work if the host got changed. We need the same TPM that was used on the host during backup, to restore. In other words,&nbsp;from vSphere 7.0U2, the override will not work if the host has TPM enabled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"in-vsphere-cli\"><strong>In vSphere CLI<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;To restore the configuration data for an ESXi host using the vSphere CLI:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"font-size:15.5px\"><li>Put the host that you want to restore maintenance mode.<\/li><li>Log in to a server where the vCLI is installed.<\/li><li>Run the&nbsp;vicfg-cfgbackup&nbsp;script with the&nbsp;-l&nbsp;flag to load the host configuration from the specified backup file:<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>vSphere CLI<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" style=\"font-size:14px\"><code lang=\"python\" class=\"language-python\">vicfg-cfgbackup --server=ESXi_host_IP_address --username=root -l backup_file\n\n# for example:\n\nvicfg-cfgbackup --server=10.0.0.1 --username=root -l ESXi_test1_backup.txt<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>vSphere CLI for Windows:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" style=\"font-size:14px\"><code lang=\"python\" class=\"language-python\">vicfg-cfgbackup.pl --server=ESXi_host_IP_address --username=root -l backup_file\n\n# for example:\n\nvicfg-cfgbackup.pl --server=10.0.0.1 --username=root -l ESXi_test1_backup.txt<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:&nbsp;<\/strong>Bypass the confirmation to proceed with the -q option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To restore an ESXi host to the stock configuration settings, run the command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" style=\"font-size:14px\"><code lang=\"python\" class=\"language-python\">vicfg-cfgbackup --server=ESXi_host_IP_address --username=root -r \n\nfor example:\n\nvicfg-cfgbackup --server=10.0.0.1 --username=root -r<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:&nbsp;<\/strong>ESXi host should be rebooted for the configuration changes to take effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"in-vsphere-powercli\">I<strong>n vSphere PowerCLI<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"backing-up-esxi-host-configuration-data-1\">Backing up ESXi host configuration data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" style=\"font-size:14px\"><code lang=\"python\" class=\"language-python\">Get-VMHostFirmware -VMHost ESXi_host_IP_address -BackupConfiguration -DestinationPath output_directory<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>For ESXi 6.7, see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.vmware.com\/en\/VMware-vSphere\/6.7\/com.vmware.esxi.install.doc\/GUID-AD450DA3-881B-4916-9231-9B6998AAC3AA.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reset the System Configuration<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" style=\"font-size:14px\"><code lang=\"python\" class=\"language-python\"># for example:\n \nGet-VMHostFirmware -VMHost 10.0.0.1 -BackupConfiguration -DestinationPath C:\\Downloads<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:&nbsp;<\/strong>A backup file is saved in the directory specified with the&nbsp;-DestinationPath&nbsp;option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"restoring-esxi-host-configuration-data-1\"><strong>Restoring ESXi host configuration data<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: When restoring configuration data, the build number of the host must match the build number of the host on backup file and UUID (can be obtained using the command&nbsp;esxcfg-info -u) of the host should match the UUID of the host on backup file.
